Hollands Wol Collectief

From unused Dutch wool to high-quality felt

Hollands Wol Collectief rescues Dutch wool that would otherwise be treated as waste. Every year, about 1.65 million kilos of wool are shorn from local sheep, yet a shocking amount is discarded, stored, or even costs farmers money to get rid of. HWC steps in to change that: collecting, cleaning, and transforming this overlooked material into high-quality felt. They then connect them to other makers that use this material to create interior designs, circular products, and more.

About the alchemists

Meet Janne and Mirthe, the duo behind Hollands Wol Collectief. Their journey began at a sustainability hackathon at BlueCity in Rotterdam, where they discovered the strange reality of Dutch wool: an abundant, natural, biodegradable material… seen as “waste.” Shocked and inspired, they decided to intervene. Today they work with farmers across the country, pay a fairer price for wool, and collaborate with designers, makers, and circular brands to bring the value of wool back into the spotlight.

About the waste

Dutch wool is soft, warm, insulating, breathable, fire-resistant, and biodegradable, yet it has been undervalued for years. Many farmers don’t earn enough to justify the shearing process, leading to wool being stored in barns, composted, or thrown away. HWC calls this what it is: a lost opportunity. They rescue this “waste” wool and give it a path back into society, where its natural qualities can be used again.

About the process

Everything begins on the farms. The sheep, their health, and their breed determine the wool’s future uses. From there, logistics become a giant countrywide puzzle: tiny farms with three sheep, huge farms with thousands, and HWC collecting it all with care. Fresh wool arrives full of straw, sweat, lanolin and stories, so it’s thoroughly cleaned, sorted, and then transformed into felt. Each breed has different fibre lengths and textures, which is why some wool becomes acoustic panels while other wool becomes lamps, sofas, or warm textiles. It’s a process shaped by nature, people, patience, and a lot of teamwork.

About their creations

HWC collaborates with designers and companies who use their wool felt in creative and meaningful ways: acoustic panels in offices, room dividers, sofas (like the circular sofas from Kairos Furniture), and beautiful lamps by designers such as Grietje Schepers. One of the most touching applications? Wool used in cofins, allowing a natural, soft, warm material to accompany someone at the end of life before returning to the earth.

The human side of circularity

When interviewing Jane and Mirthe, I loved when they shared their genuine believe that “Circularity isn’t just about products and processes, it’s about people. It’s not a sprint, it’s a marathon. That’s why we want to make sure that we care for ourselves as much as possible without normalising 60 hours work weeks.”
