The Story of
Waste Alchemists

We are the home for waste transformation. We made it our mission to change the way we see waste, forever. How? By spotlighting the makers, products, workshops, and events proving that waste is far from worthless. We bring these stories to life with joyful visuals, playful storytelling, and real connection. No blame games or doom-and-gloom talk about humanity. Just celebrating the creative uses of waste that are already out there. Curious about more? Great! That’s where it all starts.

Why does Waste Alchemists exist?

To change the way we see waste

Too much gets thrown away just because we’re used to it. We flip that mindset by showing that waste can be playful, beautiful, useful, and full of stories.

To support the makers behind this magic

Creative makers are transforming waste into wonder every day. We’re here to give them the spotlight, visibility, and support they so much deserve.

To discover makers, products, and events

Whether it’s discovering unique makers, their products, joining a hands-on workshop, or showing up at inspiring events, we make it easy and fun to be part of it.

The team behind this magic

Just like waste can’t transform itself, this platform isn’t built alone. Waste Alchemists is shaped by many curious minds, kind hearts, and creative hands. From the quiet magic of design to the loud laughter in brainstorm calls, it’s all co-created. The core crew weaving it together today? That’s Daniel with his webdesign superpowers, Jelle with his sense for playful branding, Feya with her poetic spark with illustrations, and Sam with his stubborn love for visual stories that matter. But really, we’re just the compost,  the true richness comes from the makers we spotlight and the community growing around them.

The story behind this movement

It started with a hammock.

While studying Global Project and Change Management, Sam and his team were challenged to come up with a sustainable business idea. After some wildly different brainstorms and serendipitous moments, the idea of lightweight hammocks made from old hot air balloons emerged. Curious whether that was even possible, we started calling around. That’s when we stumbled on something much bigger. One balloon company told us they often burn entire rolls of brand-new fabric, just because it were production leftovers.

That moment stuck. How much more valuable material gets thrown away without a second thought? Is there really nobody out there who could still use this “waste”?

From that seed, Waste Alchemists started to grow. We began documenting makers who turn waste into beautiful, meaningful products. Not just things, but stories. Skateboards into cutting boards. Banners into bags. Bike tires into belts.

They’re out there. But most people don’t see them. That’s what Waste Alchemists is for. A platform to spotlight makers, products, and events that show how much potential hides in plain sight. We just need to look at it differently. So let’s change the way we see waste, together.

Ring ring, is that a new collab incoming?

Got an idea, a project, a question, or a wild plan involving waste? We’re all ears. We love meeting new people, exploring fresh collaborations, and seeing where curiosity might lead. Let’s see what we can turn into something awesome, together.

Samuel Wagner

Sam studied Global Project & Change Management and discovered his love for his camera in 2019. After experimenting with leftover hot air balloon fabric, his curiosity for creative uses of waste took off. He loves being around warm, humble people chasing their dreams. Outside of work, you’ll find him moving his body, playing boardgames with friends, journaling, or diving into deep talks about life.

Daniel Jacobs

Daniel has 8 years of design and development experience. He’s passionate about building people’s creativity and aiding them in sustainable solutions. He has a background in media, sustainability and the circular economy. He loves bouldering, the gym, and adding a good joke to the conversation. Let’s see if you can spot joke-work on the website ;)

Jelle Leusink

Jelle shaped the branding and logo of Waste Alchemists. With a background in Communication and Multimedia Design, he works as a true jack of all trades from branding and concept to photo, video, and building creative spaces like co-working hub Stekplek. He loves contributing to initiatives that carry meaning, impact, or simply match his vibe. Outside of work, you’ll likely find him on an outdoor adventure, teaching skiing in the mountains, or serving food from a food truck. Movement, design thinking, and fresh ideas are kind of his thing.

Feya Hijl

Feya is a graphic designer, illustrator, and artist who has run her own business for over five years. As a full-time independent creator for the past two years, she finds energy and a constant thread in her work, and life, through color. She loves the outdoors, traveling Europe in her red camper van each year for peace and nature. She also enjoys deep conversations, cozy reading, and playing games.
