Bakers & Bananas

From rejected bananas to baked treats and banana puree

Bakers & Bananas rescues rejected bananas and turns them into banana bread, cookies and high-quality banana puree. Instead of letting perfectly edible bananas get destroyed before they even reach the supermarket, they process them into products people already love and use every day.

About the alchemist

Bakers & Bananas was founded by Laura Hoogland, who in 2018 simply couldn’t ignore the scale of banana waste anymore. What started with picking up leftover bananas from a local supermarket quickly turned into experimenting in the kitchen, baking banana bread and sharing it with others. She realised that something as everyday as a banana could trigger a much bigger and meaningful conversation. After all, what drives her is keeping things practical by making it easy for people to choose something better, without overthinking it.

About the waste

Bakers & Bananas focuses on bananas that get rejected long before they reach the supermarket. This can happen in European ports or earlier in the supply chain. The reasons are often cosmetic or logistical: bananas that are too small, too large, too green, too ripe, or simply not matching the expected standard. Even though they are perfectly edible, these bananas are often destroyed immediately after rejection. On a large scale, this creates a steady flow of waste that rarely becomes visible to consumers.

About the process

At the center of their work is the Banana Factory in the Netherlands. This is where rescued bananas are brought in from ports and other parts of the supply chain. Each batch is checked by hand for quality and ripeness. Too green bananas are left to ripen, overly ripe ones are used directly. From there, the bananas are peeled and processed into a stable, high-quality banana puree. This puree is not only used for their own products, but also supplied to other food producers. Instead of a one-off solution, this creates a continuous system where large volumes of banana waste can be processed and reintroduced into the food chain.

About their products

What most people know Bakers & Bananas for are their baked products. Banana bread was the starting point and still plays a central role, now joined by cookies and other treats. These are made using the rescued bananas and designed to be something you would pick anyway, not just because it is sustainable. At the same time, their banana puree allows many other products to exist beyond their own brand. From bakery shelves to smoothies and desserts, Bakers & Bananas makes sure rescued bananas quietly find their way back into everyday food.

From SUNT to Bakers & Bananas

You might have known them before as SUNT. With a strong following and a clear focus on banana bread, the brand already had its place. But as their work grew beyond just baking, the name started to feel too small. So in 2024, they made the shift to Bakers & Bananas. A name that better reflects the bigger vision they are building today. Same mission, new name, and still plenty of bananas to rescue ;)
