Het nieuwe logisch

From wasted tarpaulin and tubes to everyday circular bags

Het Nieuwe Logisch is a colourful, Utrecht-based design brand turning discarded tarpaulin, seat belts, and bike/car inner tubes into stylish bags. Their vibe? Fresh, bold, urban that proves circular doesn’t have to look “green,” niche, or compromised. It can be normal, affordable, and genuinely cool.

About the alchemists

Meet the team: Martijn, Elina, and Bente. Martijn is the production mastermind, Elina makes the whole operation run smoothly, and Bente is the “alleskunner” (the all-rounder) who just makes things happen. Martijn’s motivation is almost a manifesto: “We’re limiting ourselves by not using all the potential in the waste we throw away. I want to make people aware and give them tools to enable the circular economy. Circularity should feel normal, not niche.” And that’s the energy Het Nieuwe Logisch brings: accessible circular design made with ambition, humour, and heart.

About the waste

Het Nieuwe Logisch works with three waste streams, all rejected for different reasons. Bike tubes come from NS’s rental bikes when they get punctures. Car seat belts are collected from scattered small locations across the Netherlands, often in tiny batches because no central system exists. And tarpaulin comes as cutting waste from industries making truck curtains and large tents. None of these materials seem to have market value anymore. They’re leftovers. Offcuts. Odd sizes. And that inconsistency is exactly where Het Nieuwe Logisch sees so much waste alchemy opportunity.

About the process

It starts with the hunt for the mentioned waste streams by calling small dismantlers for seat belts, grabbing punctured bike tubes from NS, and picking up tarpaulin remains that would otherwise go straight to the bin. Back at their partners workshop, everything is thoroughly checked: punctures avoided in high-stress areas, damaged sections removed, materials cleaned, and cuts made with precision so the final bag is as strong and good-looking as any new one. The most surprising part? Working with waste means every piece requires dozens of micro-decisions. Nothing is standardized. Every bag is a tiny puzzle and that’s exactly why they do it.

About their creations

Het Nieuwe Logisch makes bags in different sizes and personalities, from weekend bags to smaller everyday bags and their accidental bestseller: the fanny pack. It was born during prototype number 13 of their big bag, when a roommate looked at a mini mock-up and said, “I actually like this!”. So in the end, it’s all about playful experimentation mixed with serious craftsmanship. And while bags are their starting point, the team sees them as the first step into a bigger journey of turning overlooked materials into everyday essentials.

The paradox of circularity

“The toughest part isn’t turning waste into bags. It’s realising how little control you have over the waste stream. One week the world sends you twenty seat belts. The next week it sends you thirty. But what you really need is 200.” It seems like designing with leftovers really means dancing with chaos, and learning to enjoy it.
