Skateriors

From broken skateboards to colourful interior pieces

At Skateriors otherwise wasted skateboards are transformed into the coolest and most colourful new products. Each item carries the marks and stories of countless rides, tricks, and visits at the skatepark.

About the alchemists

Shasa is the mastermind behind Skateriors. After years of being a professional skateboarder himself he asked himself “Why don’t I use my carpintery skills to make use of the piles of old and broken skateboards out there?”. So he combined his skills and passions to create colourful wooden products. Nowadays, iff you want to find him, you need to pay a visit to the Creatieve Coöperatie (CO) in Zwolle and if he’s not there… he is probably shredding it at the park.

About the waste

Every year thousands of skateboards crack, delaminate, or are simply being discarded, quietly forming a niche waste stream most people would never even notice or consider. Yet it is abundant, layered with beautiful colours, history and durable wood. Skateriors’ work shows how even the most specific waste streams have huge potential for funky, colourful and vibrant creations.

About the process

It all begins at local skateparks like in Leeuwarden for example. When decks snap or get retired, they come together at a collecting which Shasa picks up every now and then. At his workshop he then first inspects them and takes off the grip tape. Once this is done, every product has its own crafting process that it undergoes. What is clear though, Shasa will make make sure to critically check every step of the process to make sure it’s exactly the way he wants it to be.

About their creations

So what does Skateriors end up creating from skateboards? In short, high-end interior furniture. But more specifically, he creates from cutting boards, coasters and knife handles to earrings, toys, and even axes! However, I’ve also found bird houses, candle holders, and swings.

Two fun facts about Skateriors

Number one, to show how much Shasa enjoys creating with waste, he even huge used nails from an old bridge and melted them down to transform it into a blade made from waste. Number two, Skateriors was the very first craftsman I filmed in 2022 that sparked the concept of spotlighting makers transforming waste into awesome products!
